One Month!
Nina is one month old!
She has been an amazingly mellow baby over this first month. We'd like to think it's all due to our much more relaxed attitudes with baby #2, but in fact we think we just got lucky with a happy, calm baby who loves to sleep!
Nina's accomplishments in month 1 include: sleeping, eating, slight head lifts (and few tears) during tummy time, filling up the diaper bin on a regular basis, and, in the past day or two, smiling! Nina's first smile came when Paul and Sam were talking to her -- we aren't surprised that Sam would make her smile!
Speaking of Samantha, she has far exceeded our expectations as a big sister. She is extremely attentive and doting on Nina. The first thing she wants to do in the morning when she gets out of bed is run in to check on Nina, and whenever Nina makes the slightest cry, Sam assures her: "It's okay Nina, Mama's here, Dada's here, Sam's here...". Sammy also loves to help us out with Nina, getting her a new diaper, running to get her blankets, etc. We feel very lucky that the transition has (so far) been as smooth as it has!
Here are a few pictures from Nina's first month. So far, we think she looks a lot like her sister Sammy!

Nina Quinn!
Nina Quinn Breckenridge was born at 7:00 a.m. on Friday, November 20, 2009. Nina weighed 7 lb 9 oz, and measured 20.5 inches in length -- very similar to the measurements of her big sister!
Big sister Samantha got to meet Nina on Friday morning when she came to the hospital with Grandma. While Sam was understandably a little reserved at first -- mom in a hospital bed, a new baby swaddled up, lots of machines everywhere, and all four of her grandparents plus Aunt Abby in one place! -- she quickly warmed up, and alternated between being curious about Nina and wanting to hold her, to serving as our entertainment as she danced around the room.
As I post this, Nina is now nearly a month old!(It's taken a while to get our act together on the new blog site...). More updates, and photos, to come. For now, though, here are a few pictures of Nina on Days 1 and 2!

Foster Island
We spent a beautiful weekend morning a couple weeks ago going on a "hike" with Sam and Gramps at Foster Island, near the Lake Washington arboretum. Sammy loves the winding trails, the duck sightings, and the "tunnels" of trees. Photos below are courtesy of Gramps - Dick Breckenridge.
We are definitely in final countdown mode now, with the due date for Sam's baby brother or sister just 1 week from today (Nov. 22). Sammy seems excited at times to be a big sister -- talking about how she wants to hold the baby, and teach it the ABCs -- though of course we know it's going to be quite the adjustment (for all of us)! She's also recently discussed the fact that actually she has a baby in her belly...could be a little confusing to sort that one out! Needless to say, we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of this baby, and will be in touch with the big news whenever it finally happens!

Happy Birthday Samantha!
It's still hard for us to believe, but Samantha's 2nd birthday was October 11. It was a beautiful fall day, and we had a lot of fun celebrating with friends and family.
For her birthday, we gave her a new play kitchen (note: play kitchen = 4+ hours of assembly on a Friday night...). The look on her face when she walked into the room and saw it that morning was pretty priceless, and we are now the fortunate recipients of many a cup of tea or plate of eggs prepared special by Sam from her new kitchen.
Husky Fan
Sammy made it to her first UW Husky Football game of the season a few weeks ago, when UW took on USC. We had no idea how she'd like it, and thought it'd be a good game to take her to as it'd probably be fine to leave at halftime. Little did we know that the game would be so good, or that Sammy would like it so much! When given the option to head home with Mama on the bus at halftime, or stay for the football game, she chose the latter. By the 3rd quarter, she was high-fiving with the fans behind us, and cheering and clapping her hands.
Needless to say, she's clearly a good luck charm, and will be joining us again when the Huskies take on the Ducks this weekend! Here are a couple pictures from the game...

Videos
A couple videos from a recent afternoon at Gasworks Park. In one, Sammy had just taken her shirt off to be like her dad, and was clearly excited about this development. In the other, after hamming it up for the camera, she exhibits her new tendency to take off running, only checking occasionally to make sure we're tracking her location...
Doe Bay
We spent last weekend at Doe Bay Resort on Orcas Island in the San Juans. It was a beautiful spot and we definitely hope to go back again soon. Here are a few pictures...

Cute penguins make everything feel better
After a traumatic sequence of events a few weeks ago in which Sam had to spend a night at Children's Hospital with breathing problems caused by viral pneumonia, she got to spend a few days home from school for some TLC. She bounced back amazingly quickly, and on her last day at home, we spent a great morning at the zoo.
Sam loves the new penguin exhibit at the zoo. Maybe I'm biased, but I think the zoo should consider using these images in its next ad campaign... :)

Big Girl
A few recent developments for Sammy on the "big girl" front:
--She has moved from being relatively afraid of the water, to being so eager to jump in that she's nearly springing out of dad's arms. On the really hot evenings we had in Seattle, this came in handy as we essentially camped out in Lake Washington!

--Her hair continues to grow, mostly in curls. She's generally resistent to any hair style (pigtails, etc.,), though has taken an interest in putting her own hair or other accessories on temporarily...

--She's becoming much more brave on the playground, and recently has wanted to swing from everything she sees (coffee table, tree branch, etc.)

--Her vocab continues to explode. She's nearly got the ABC song down, and regularly serenedes us from the back seat of the car with her own medly of Twinkle Twinkle/Old McDonald/Wheels on the Bus/etc.
--Speaking of the bus, she's a Metro bus regular, taking the bus to and from school with mom or dad most days. She loves to ring the bell, and the other day said "Thank You Bus Driver" on our way off the bus.

--She's definitely got her own agenda on certain things, whether it be to eat her slushy in her own chair with her own spoon on her own terms, or what shoes she wants in the morning.

--Like her parents, she's very ready for Husky season to start. Warm-up suit is in the closet.

Friends
Samantha's summer has included hangout time with lots of different friends. We're hoping that the obvious joy she feels spending time with other kids will translate to a relatively smooth transition with baby brother or sister! Following are some pictures from the summer of Sam's time with various friends:

Sunriver
We spent a great long weekend at Sunriver in Bend, Oregon this summer with the Savages and Flosis. The highlight for all of us was seeing how much fun the cousins had with each other. Sammy is now old enough to really have fun playing with Jake (age 4) and Becca (age 2). They had a great time riding bikes (Becca and Sam in the "chariot" in back), swimming, jumping on the bed, etc. Here are some pictures from the weekend.
